In June of 2020, we introduced our client EarthRenew Inc. (ERTH: CSE), a company in the development phase that transforms livestock waste into high-performance organic fertilizer. EarthRenew’s fertilizer is intended to be used by organic and traditional growers in Canada and the United States. As many consumers continue to focus on eating healthy and organic, more are realizing the quality of food has a lot to do with soil health.

EarthRenew’s First Organic Fertilizer Product Sale of 2020

On November 25th, EarthRenew announced its first fertilizer sale of 2020. The company sold 25 tonnes of its GrowER fertilizer product to NorthWind Land Resources – an Alberta leader in wellsite reclamation. The fertilizer is to be used in an oil wellsite reclamation project near Red Deer, Alberta. According to the Company’s press release, “the site currently faces serious soil compaction and aeration issues that limit crop growth. . .”

We have to admit, wellsite reclamation was not a niche we considered for EarthRenew several months back when we first introduced them, but given the thousands of abandoned wells in Alberta alone, it could become a viable vertical for the Company.

The importance of reclamation as it pertains to Canada’s energy sector cannot be understated. In April, Canada’s federal government reported,

“Up to $1 billion to the Government of Alberta to support the province’s work to clean up inactive oil and gas wells across the province”

And a further,

“$200 million to the Alberta Orphan Wells Association (OWA) to support its work to clean up orphan oil and gas wells and well sites across Alberta. The OWA will fully repay this amount.”

Let’s take a closer look at some of the highlights from EarthRenew’s announcement on November 25th:

  • “EarthRenew sold 25 tonnes of its GrowER fertilizer to NorthWind Land Resources Inc. to use in an oil wellsite reclamation project near Red Deer, Alberta
  • NorthWind applied 7.69 tonnes per acre over a three acre site to address soil compaction issues that limit vegetation regrowth
  • EarthRenew’s GrowER fertilizer can enhance microbial activity, improve soil health and facilitate the growth of new vegetation and help address the major environmental issue around oil well cleanup”


According to the Guardian, which cites a 2015 report by the University of Sheffield’s Grantham Centre for Sustainable Futures,

“The world has lost a third of its arable land due to erosion or pollution in the past 40 years, with potential disastrous consequences as global demand for food soars…”

According to the World Wildlife Organization, “the loss of fertile soil makes land less productive for agriculture, creates new deserts, pollutes waterways and can alter how water flows through the landscape, potentially making flooding more common.”

Back to November 25th’s press release…

NorthWind’s Robbie Price commented,

“The GrowER fertilizer product has proven to be very helpful in reclaiming soil by improving soil fertility and chemistry and promoting root medium development. . .”

And that,

“This type of product and process can help accelerate soil development in heavily compacted soils and it provides us with another tool to address the negative environmental impact that remains once an oil wellsite is closed.”

To Become Leading Organic Fertilizer Provider – EarthRenew’s Primary Goal

According to Valuates Reports,

“The global Organic Fertilizer market size is projected to reach USD 13.8 Billion by 2026, from USD 6.9 Billion in 2019, at a CAGR of 10.4% during 2021-2026.”

Although far more mature, by comparison, the fertilizer market at large is forecast to grow much slower. writes,

“The fertilizer market is evaluated at US$206.392 billion for the year 2019 growing at a CAGR of 1.98% reaching the market size of US$232.221 billion by the year 2025.”

Although just a small portion of the fertilizer sector today, we expect organic fertilizer to continue to garner more of the overall fertilizer market over the next decade-plus.

EarthRenew’s Core Asset

In our report on EarthRenew released in June, we stated,

“In May, we visited EarthRenew’s flagship Strathmore facility (the “Facility”), which is located on a ~25,000 head cattle feedlot owned by a third-party, Cattleland Feedyards. Right now, the Company is in the midst of redesign of the Facility. Although not currently in operation as an organic fertilizer production plant (it last produced organic fertilizer in 2010), EarthRenew recently commenced detailed engineering work for the redesign of this facility.

Two of the main purposes of the Facility’s redesign are to:

a) enable EarthRenew to increase output and,

b) expand the Company’s organic fertilizer offerings [product line] and provide different formulations for various crop and soil types (pending test results). EarthRenew believes that its new formulations, which are currently under development, could open multiple new potential revenue streams.”

In respect to the Strathmore facility (the “Strathmore Plant”) redevelopment plans, EarthRenew stated on November 10th that,

  • “Our updated schedule anticipates construction contract award before the end of the year, with construction activities on-site beginning early in 2021.
  • Discussions have begun with potential construction contractors.
  • The project will be constructed using a two-phase approach. The first phase will see the installation of drying and mixing machinery, which together will produce a bulk-dried mix product. The second phase, to commence in the future, will include the implementation of pelletizing or granulation technology, and CCm’s upgrading module.”


Following up on this news, EarthRenew announced on December 1st that it had renewed a lease and feedstock agreement for its Strathmore facility co-located at Cattleand Feedyards’ site, in Strathmore, Alberta. The Company stated the facility will “be able to produce approximately 18,000 tonnes per year of finished fertilizer product from the manure provided by Cattleland Feedyards.”

Let’s look at the highlights of this renewal lease:

  • “EarthRenew has renewed its lease of 2.92 acres of the Cattleland Feedyards site located in Wheatland County, Alberta, East of Calgary, for a 9-year term, with eight 5- year extension options.
  • The feedstock agreement included in the lease agreement secures a minimum of 40,000 tonnes of wet manure feedstock annually, which we estimate can be used to generate up to 18,000 tonnes of EarthRenew organic fertilizer
  • Cattleland Feedyards expects savings of up to $500,000 annually by taking advantage of the unique on-site waste management solution provided by EarthRenew”

Regarding the lease renewal, Cattleland Feedyards’ CEO, Keith Gregory, commented,

“The recommissioning of the EarthRenew facility will comprise the majority of our manure management solution. By taking our waste, EarthRenew’s operation will help us save close to half a million dollars a year in hauling and spreading costs.”

Getting the Strathmore facility up and running (anticipated for Spring of 2021) will likely be EarthRenew’s chief goal in the months ahead.

It’s worth noting that EarthRenew intends to do more than just produce organic fertilizer that helps restore soil health. In addition to helping combat soil degradation via its custom pelleted organic fertilizer, EarthRenew aims to help reduce the environmental damage and liability posed by untreated cattle manure.

Because of manure’s potential detrimental effect on the environment, cattle ranchers can be faced with a liability threat if they cannot properly dispose of manure. This is a big challenge for ranchers with several thousand or more cattle. You might say that manure management itself could be a barrier to entry for cattle farming, not to mention a growth limiter. And EarthRenew wants to help ranchers with that potential barrier…

According to FoodPrint,

“In the US, the amount of waste produced by livestock in concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs), also known as factory farms, is tremendous. Livestock manure, unlike human waste, is not treated before it is disposed of. The untreated manure emits airborne chemicals and fumes, and when runoff occurs, dangerous pollutants enter our waterways.”
